We’re also working with another enthusiast to bring a vintage Japanese Motorcycle feature to the swap meet this year. (Had it planned for last year, but an injury sidelined him—looking forward to it this year!) We’ll get that date published as soon as possible, so we have plenty of time for everyone to plan.

If anybody has suggestions for other things you think would be cool, by all means, let me know! The bike show and the vintage motorcycles were 100-percent driven by other guys who called me up and said “Hey, would you be interested in…”

Eckler’s $10 Gift Certificates for Cruise-in Participants!
As we’ve been doing every month since Eckler’s came onboard as our Title Sponsor, we’ll be giving an Eckler’s $10 gift certificate to participants who drive their enthusiasts vehicles into the swap meet and park them along the grandstand in our cruise-in area every month for 2019.

This year we’ve laid out the marques in a schedule, so enthusiasts can plan what to drive, but more importantly so we can start working with car clubs to get more participation from them.

January: All makes get a gift certificate.
February: Chevy drivers get a gift certificate

May 11-12: GearJam/Eckler’s NEGA Swap Meet: All makes

Car Club Days
For a few years, I’ve had a program for car clubs—if they use the NEGA Swap Meet as a club destination/event, I’ll let all the members in for free as spectators and vendors that month, and we’ll let them set up together on the show field so the club’s vendors and cruise-in vehicles can all hang out together.
This year, we’re going to sweeten it with the Eckler’s gift certificates, too.

Over the years, we’ve had a few clubs take advantage of this, but not nearly enough. Now that we have a specific schedule of gift certificate dates, I’m going to reach out to every enthusiast club I can find and see if they’re interested in setting something up for one of the swap meets this year. Each club can have one “Club Day” per year, but there is no limit to the number of clubs that can participate on the same day—meaning, if ten clubs want to come to the July swap meet, then 10 clubs get a Club Day entry to the July swap meet. (We won’t have a free-entry Club Day during the Gear Jam, though we will absolutely make every effort to accommodate clubs so their members can park together.)

In the coming weeks, I’ll be reaching out to car, truck and off-road clubs to get us on their activities calendar.

Bathrooms for December, January and February
The track shuts off the water during the winter months, so we have portable facilities brought in. They’ll be placed next to the regular bathrooms. Just giving all of you a heads-up.

Brad’s Blasted Body at NuTech Soda Blasting
TRUCK body!… truck body.
I dropped off a wholllle lotta ’62 Chevy K10 at NuTech this month. The complete disassembled step-side long bed, rear fenders, running boards, doors, inner front fenders, front fenders, core support, grille surround, battery tray, spare tire mount, and a bunch of other stuff got blasted and primed, ready for bodywork at W&H Restorations and Performance in Jefferson, GA.

A couple months back I had the cab blasted. I’ve hunted for a while, finding these good pieces all over—and they’re some of the straightest, most solid bits I’ve seen for these trucks since I started playing with them 13 years ago with the gray ’61 Suburban. Unlike other “good” pieces I’ve dropped off at NuTech over the years, there were very, very few surprises with these once NuTech stripped ‘em nekkid and showed me what I really had.

My truck bits were only a small part of the stuff NuTech blasted this month: They also stripped a couple Honda aluminum air-cooled motorcycle engines (not mine) and a set of brake calipers and wheels from a Lamborghini (!). They also did some antique brass interior lamp stands, another set of Grandma’s steel patio furniture and glider, an antique cast iron indoor circular gas heater with brass fittings, and he’s setting up to do the herringbone-inlaid, wood cathedral ceiling in a 150 year old church.

They’re also selling a nice ’65 Chevy truck—chassis has been lowered and the front end updated, interior’s been updated, bed wood is finished and pretty… this is a hot rod, and it’s well on its way to being a really nice hot rod.

Same Old Same Old at Lamar Walden Automotive
Talked with Rob Walden today, and got the same old story:
What’d you work on cool this month?
“Ohh… I dunno… not much, really…”
(sigh….) Any big blocks?
“Yeah—we put together a 14:71 blower motor that’s going on the dyno next week…we also finished the big-inch Pontiac motor and it made 800 horsepower on the dyno. And we finished a ’62 409 that’s going on the dyno next week, too. And we finished a 477 gasser motor.”
Any LS swaps?
“We’ve got a ’68 Firebird getting an LS3 and 4L60 swap… and next week a Olds Cutlass is coming in for a Holley Sniper EFI conversion.”
Any aluminum restoration?
“Yeah; we did a Corvette 3×2 intake, and a set of valve covers and intake for Johnny over at JP Muscle Cars. I guess that’s about it…”

Yeah… not really much going on over at Lamar Walden Automotive this month.
I think it’s been like that the whole 50 years they’ve been in business–One man’s drool fuel is another’s ordinary everyday.

Johnny Palmer’s House of Speed, Performance And Really Cool Stuff
JP’s Muscle Car Parts is like talking to Rob Walden. “Whatcha got these days?” Oh…. Not much…
And then he tells you about the latest barn find, the current list of LS driveline donors, or cool old trucks for sale.

His current list is tough to decide which I’d like best… you know, if I wasn’t spending all my money and space on the Altered, the K10, the ’76 Power Wagon or the rest of the junk I have.

Like the Barn-find 1972 GMC Sierra Grande 30 Longhorn. Mostly original paint, big block, TH400, A/C, loaded. It runs and drives, has some minor rust and lots of patina. That was an expensive truck in its day, and would make a killer shop truck, camper hauler, or tow rig for a vintage race car.

Original paint Texas 1957 Bel Air 4-door station wagon, 265, 3spd Overdrive manual, dealer-installed air, nice interior, runs and drives. Very original Texas car. Johnny says this is one of the nicest original cars he’s ever had. He told me the price, I don’t remember what it was, but I remember thinking “Yeah, that’s worth it.” (K10… Altered… K10… Altered… K10… Altered… You don’t need another cool old car, Brad… K10… Altered…)

Something in between the GMC and the ’57 is this 1965 Chevelle Wagon: Solid California car, 305, TH350, Power Steering, Runs and drives, needs interior and lots of love. Drop in a good 350 backed by a 700r4 Overdrive, lower it, install a nice interior, weather stripping and send it. You’ll be cooler than any parents in the school parking lot… and they’ll all know it.

1964 GMC 1-Ton Wrecker, V8 Chevy, 4-speed, runs, brakes are weak, has some rust, but it is restorable. (Brakes are an easy fix, throw some paint at it, paint a shop or garage name on the doors and this would make a great movie prop vehicle. Or lose the wrecker boom and have a cool vintage flat-bed dually. I have a sickness for vintage duallies. I don’t know what it is…)

Johnny is also booking work deep into February already for wiring jobs, AC installs, driveline swaps, disc brake conversions and restoration work. If you’ve got some stuff you need done to make your car or truck better for next year, call and make your appointment sooner rather than later.

Bud’s Garage Radio
So if there’s an upside to pushing the swap meet back the last two weekends, it’s this: You can listen to Bud’s Garage this Saturday from the comfort of your own shop!

Over the next couple weeks, they’ll be talking about Atlanta Motorsports Park cart racing and sales (if I was smart, I’d have gotten into Cart racing instead of building the Altered and this K10, and could just buy one of Johnny’s barn finds); the LA Auto Show; Surviving a Christmas Road Trip with the kids (I’m thinking this is a much simpler subject than most parents today think it is…); Teen Driving instruction in their own cars, with their parents!; Detailing and ceramic coating your new car’s paint; and the WINE-POWERED ASTON MARTIN owned by Prince Charles—who has a stable of over 100 cars.

I…. don’t even know what to do with that last one… I don’t know what’s more remarkable: That Prince Chuck has over a hundred cars, or that one of them is an Aston Martin that runs on red wine.
